Setting Up a Blackmagic ATEM

Send your service from a Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro, ATEM Mini Extreme or ATEM SDI switcher to the platform over RTMPS, an encrypted connection.

Setting Up a Blackmagic ATEM

The ATEM Mini Pro, ATEM Mini Extreme and ATEM SDI Pro and Extreme switchers can stream straight to the platform, without a computer in between. They stream up to 1080p.

Your stream is encrypted. The platform takes video only over RTMPS — RTMP inside an encrypted connection, the way YouTube and Facebook take it — so your stream key never crosses the internet in clear text. ATEM switchers stream encrypted from firmware 8.6.1: update ATEM Software Control and the switcher to the latest version first.

You set it up in ATEM Software Control, on a computer connected to the switcher.

Have the Connect your encoder card open in The Hub → Streaming — it appears when you start or schedule a stream.

Send over RTMPS

  1. Open ATEM Software Control and go to the Output tab, then Live Stream.
  2. Set Platform to the custom option, Custom URL H.264.
  3. Server: paste the Server from the Hub, rtmps://ingest.streaming.1stflock.com:443/live.
  4. Key: paste the Stream Key from the Hub.
  5. Quality: Streaming High — about 6 Mb/s at 1080p30.
  6. Press On Air on the switcher, or On Air in ATEM Software Control.

If Platform has no custom option, your ATEM Software Control is out of date: update it and the switcher. The alternative is a streaming settings file loaded with Stream → Load Streaming Settings; contact support and we will help you with it.

The Stream Key changes with every stream: each week, paste the new one into Key.

Keyframes and audio. The ATEM sets its own keyframe interval and sends audio at 128 Kbps; there is nothing to change.

SRT

Use RTMPS with an ATEM. Its SRT sends the Stream ID in a format of its own, which our servers do not read, so an ATEM cannot connect over SRT.

If something goes wrong

  • It will not connect. Check Server starts with rtmps://, includes :443, and ends in /live with nothing after it, and that the Key is this stream's Stream Key, complete — it contains a ? and a =. Then check the switcher's firmware is 8.6.1 or later. If it still will not connect, contact support: we will get you streaming.
  • Viewers see the picture freeze or the stream drop. Lower Quality to Streaming Medium, and connect the switcher with a network cable rather than Wi-Fi.

The settings every encoder needs, and what to expect if a server fails, are in Choosing and Setting Up an Encoder. Support is available 24/7.
