Setting Up vMix

Send your service from vMix to the platform over RTMPS, an encrypted connection, with the exact settings.

Setting Up vMix

vMix is Windows broadcasting software (Windows 10 64-bit or newer). It streams to the platform over RTMPS — RTMP inside an encrypted connection, so your stream key never crosses the internet in clear text — which vMix has supported since version 21. These steps follow vMix 29's own help pages.

Editions. vMix Basic HD and HD output up to 1080p. For 4K you need vMix 4K, Pro or MAX.

Have the Connect your encoder card open in The Hub → Streaming — it appears when you start or schedule a stream.

Send over RTMPS

  1. Click the cog next to the Stream button.
  2. Set Destination to Custom RTMP Server.
  3. URL: paste the Server from the Hub, rtmps://ingest.streaming.1stflock.com:443/live.
  4. Stream Key: paste the Stream Key from the Hub.
  5. Open the quality settings and set:
vMix settingValue
Video CodecH264
Video Bitrate6000 for 1080p, 16000 for 4K
Audio Bitrate160
Keyframe Frequency (seconds)2
CBRTicked
Use Hardware EncoderTicked, if your computer has one
Resolution1920x1080 for 1080p, 3840x2160 for 4K
  1. Click OK, then Stream to go live.

vMix's help gives bitrates in kilobits per second ("2000 = 2mbps").

The Stream Key changes with every stream. Each week, open the same settings and paste the new Stream Key from the Hub; everything else stays.

Or send over SRT (encrypted)

If your vMix offers it, SRT is the better choice: it copes better with a shaky internet connection and recovers faster if one of our servers fails. It is encrypted with a passphrase of the stream's own, shown on the Connect your encoder card beside the Stream ID; without it the connection is refused. SRT needs outgoing UDP to port 8890; if your network blocks it, use RTMPS above.

In vMix, SRT is set up as an output, not on the Stream button. These fields follow vMix's own SRT help; Key Length is there from vMix 24.

  1. Open Settings and go to the Outputs tab.
  2. Click the cog next to the output you want to send (Output 1 is the main program).
  3. Tick Enable SRT and fill in:
vMix fieldValue
TypeCaller
Hostnameingest.streaming.1stflock.com — the host on its own: no srt://, no port
Port8890
Latency500
PassphrasePaste the Passphrase from the Hub
Key Length32 (256-bit encryption)
Stream IDPaste the Stream ID from the Hub, whole
Video CodecH264
Video Bitrate6000 for 1080p, 16000 for 4K
Audio Bitrate160
Keyframe Frequency (seconds)2
CBRTicked
Resolution1920x1080 for 1080p, 3840x2160 for 4K
  1. Click OK. The output's SRT indicator turns red when it is connected, and amber when it cannot connect.

vMix's guidance for Latency is at least four times your ping time to the server; 500 milliseconds covers almost any building connection.

The Stream ID and the passphrase change with every stream. Each week, paste the new Stream ID and Passphrase from the Hub; everything else stays.

If something goes wrong

  • The SRT indicator stays amber. Check that Hostname is the bare host with no srt:// and no port, that Port is 8890, that the Passphrase is this stream's and complete, and that the Stream ID is exactly as shown, starting with publish:live/. If your building's firewall blocks outgoing UDP, ask whoever looks after the network to allow outgoing UDP to port 8890, or use RTMPS.
  • It will not connect. Check the URL starts with rtmps:// — not rtmp:// — includes :443, and ends in /live, and that the Stream Key is this stream's and complete: it contains a ? and a =.
  • Viewers see stalls at the start. Check Keyframe Frequency is 2.

The settings every encoder needs, and what to expect if a server fails, are in Choosing and Setting Up an Encoder. Support is available 24/7.
